Why is my engine oil light on?

Your vehicle dashboard displays warning lamps and indicators that allow you to easily monitor your vehicle’s condition and control settings.
indicators and warning lights

The engine oil light and other indicators routinely light up when you start your vehicle.

But if the engine oil light stays on or comes on while you’re driving, it is alerting you to a malfunction

Here’s what to do if your engine oil light stays on or lights up while you’re driving.

  1. Pull off to the side of the road as soon as it’s safe to do so.

  2. Turn your engine off.

  3. Check the engine oil level. (For instructions, see your Owner Manuals.)

  4. If your engine oil is at the appropriate level, yet the warning lamp remains lit, do not resume driving.

  5. Have the system checked by your authorized dealer as soon as possible. (Help me locate a dealer.)
